Return of the Bison | Live Chat with Mike Fitz

The story of North American bison represents one of tremendous loss as well as the hope that through work and dedication we can learn to share the landscape with large, wild animals. If we are to return bison to more of the landscape, then effort will not be easy. Bison are large animals with the strength and disposition to injure people and damage property. They can migrate over vast distances, and North America is no longer an open range. They can spread disease to domestic animals and suffer from illnesses our animals give to them. Despite these challenges, making space for bison in parks, preserves, and private lands can not only help to restore an environmental loss but can also play a part in rectifying past injustices suffered by indigenous peoples. In bison, perhaps there’s hope for a better future.More
