Walrus in Graphite and Paint Pen | Drawn to Explore
Published on: Aug. 19 2025
Welcome to Drawn to Explore, an artist-naturalist live chat series on explore.org designed to deepen your connection to nature through sketching and observation. In each episode, we explore a different wild subject and creative technique. Today, we’ll be sketching a walrus, using a combination of graphite and paint pen. Walruses are among the most charismatic pinnipeds seen on the Round Island Walrus Cam — massive, social, and uniquely textured. We’ll use these tools to capture not only what this walrus looks like, but what it feels like to encounter it: powerful, resilient, and entirely at home in its rugged coastal world.
Materials Needed: Drawing paper (smooth or lightly textured) Graphite pencils (2H, HB, 4B, 6B) White paint pen (fine and medium tip) Kneaded eraser Blending stump or tissue
