The otherworldly aurora is unlike anything else we can witness on Earth. Watching these lights dance in the sky provokes feelings of awe, wonder, and mystery. Only recently—within the last 150 years really—have we been able to begin to understand its physics. The science and enjoyment of the aurora reminds us about how much we’ve learned about this type of space weather and how much remains to be discovered. The aurora might seem untouchable, but it has the potential to impact our communication systems and power grid.
