Susan Thank you for highlighting the issue of how far many women and children need to walk daily, often under dangerous conditions, to supply their families with water for drinking and cooking. Much of the water, even from wells, may contain harmful bacteria/pathogens. Simple solar ovens can be used to boil the water, replacing or reducing use of wood or kerosene for cooking, also reducing deforestation/tragic burns. An organization working to supply people with access to potable water is charity: water. It uses mainstream and social media platforms to raise awareness. Charity:water has garnered donations from over 50,000 individuals to fund water projects. GPS coordinates and photos of the wells drilled with charity:water funds are shown in e-news releases. Scott Harrison, founder, was a NYC club promoter. At age 31, he decided there must be more to living than flashing a Rolex watch and snorting heroin. In 2004, Scott volunteered service in Liberia with Mercy Ships. It was an eye-opening experience for him. He traced problems surrounding education, safety and health back to a lack of clean water and basic sanitation systems. Upon his return, he used his media networks to involve as many people as he could to support the cause. A young girl named Rachel Beckwith heard about charity:water through her church where members were raising funds to go toward drilling a well. She asked friends and family to donate $9 to charity:water for her 9th birthday. Subsequently, her family's car was hit by a truck in a 13-car pileup. The other family members emerged unharmed but Rachel had severe injuries and later died. In her honor and memory, contributions poured in to charity: water, topping $1 million. last month
