  • Historical photograph of Duke Kahanamoku (Aug. 24, 1890 – Jan. 22, 1968). He was a Hawaiian-born Olympic swimmer who was responsible for making popular the modern sport of surfing.
  • Eddie Aikau (May 4, 1946 – March 17, 1978) was the first lifeguard at Oahu's Waimea Bay. He often braved waves of 30 feet (9.1 meters) or more, resulting in the phrase, "Eddie would go." Because of his bravery, not a single life was lost while he was there. He was also one of the most famous big-wave surfers of the islands.
