adrenaline junkie, vol. 1: avalanche rescue

Large avalanches, or massive slabs of snow that break loose from a mountainside and shatter as they go downhill, can reach speeds of 80 miles (130 kilometers) per hour within about five seconds. Victims of these types of avalanches — usually skiiers, snowboarders, and snowmobilers — rarely escape. But death from smaller, dry-powder avalanches can often be avoided, thanks to the rescue efforts of the Jackson Hole Ski Patrol, which uses dogs to locate avalanche victims and dig them out of the snow.
