kelp forest cam - channel islands national park

Kelp forests are found in shallow waters along most of the North American west coast. The Channel Islands National Park, off the coast of southern California, has some of the densest and diverse kelp forests in the world.

Similar to terrestrial forests, kelp forests grow in dense groupings and provide a habitat for thousands of organisms. Sea otters, whales, seals, sea lions and sharks are just some of the animals that live in or around kelp forests.

Kelp forests obtain energy through photosynthesis and are dependent on the sun's rays. Therefore, kelp forest only grow in shallow, nutrient-rich waters that are penetrable by light. In ideal conditions, some kelp forests can grow up to 15 inches in a single day!
