Hummingbird Camera

With nearly 300 different species, hummingbirds are well known for their impressive wing speeds where they can beat their wings 80 times per second, essentially creating an audible hum. Found only in the Western Hemisphere, hummingbirds range from 1.75 to 8 inches and have a life span of up to four years. Watch the live hummingbird camera carefully and you may notice that a hummingbird can fly in every single direction, including upside down, and can hover over a plant to gather food by beating its wings in a figure eight motion.

Hummingbirds have a narrow long beak that allows for them to gain access to the centers of flowers for pollen. Hummingbirds have very long tongues and can even lick their food at a speed of 13 licks per second. Their diet normally consists of pollen, flower nectar, tree sap and small insects. Because hummingbirds move at such fast speeds, their heartbeats and body temperatures have to match as well. Therefore, they must constantly be consuming food to keep up with their calorie burning lifestyle. Leave a comment about the hummingbird cam below!

Little Bella the hummingbird has been nesting in the branches of a ficus tree in La Verne, California since at least 2005. Diligently raising up to four to five broods every year, in a nest the about size of half a golf ball. Each of her precious eggs are slightly bigger than a Tic Tac. After about two and a half weeks, the eggs hatch and the tiny little chicks will begin exploring the world. Bella protects her babies and feeds them a diet of insects and nectar. The babies fledge 21-25 days from hatch and are ready to discover the joys of flight. Join our loyal community of viewers in watching this patient mother throughout her breeding season.
